Chinese New Year

[slideshow_deploy id=’306′] To celebrate Chinese New Year in February 2013 I introduced a Chinese Themed Week into the library. The idea was to promote a new Chinese Studies TY module that was introduced in September 2012. The library was decked in Chinese décor, I showcased an exhibition that covered all parts of Chinese Culture from the Cultural Revolution to Terra Cotta Warriors and students had the opportunity to take part in a quiz. The event was cross-curricular which Home Economics, Enterprise, Chinese Studies and English being some of the subjects that took part. TY students were treated to a calligraphy lesson. At the movies

[slideshow_deploy id=’315′] To celebrate and promote books that have been made into movies in April 2013 I had an “At the Movies” themed week. It was no Hollywood but the library did have a certain charm to it. During this week students could walk down a red carpet, browse the many books that have been made into movies and take part in the “At the Movies” quiz. Over one hundred students took part in the quiz which involved a number of questions whereby students were given hints about books and had to guess the title. The hints varied from who acted in the film version to the characters in the book. To add to the excitement IMC Dun Laoghaire kindly donated some cinema tickets that I used as prizes. Landing in the moon

On July 20, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the lunar landing module Eagle and became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. The words “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” were heard by a more than a billion people listening at home. Armstrong died on August 25, 2012 at age 82. To commemorate his passing I featured a “landing on the moon” exhibition in the library. The exhibition included information on the landing, facts about the moon, a quiz and a running documentary. “The surface is fine and powdery. I can kick it up loosely with my toe.
