Karen Ní Bhróin, conductor with the RTE Philharmonic Orchestra came to talk to our music students about how she became a conductor. I invited her as part of an inspiring women’s theme I have been having in Cluny Library. The reason I choose her was because there are still so few female conductors and I wanted the girls to be exposed to someone who has found work in a predominately male environment and who was passionate enough to follow her dreams.
Karen’s talk was really interesting. She spoke about how she became a conductor, gave some advice to the girls and even did some of her own conducting as the girls clapped along. Whether any of them are aspiring conductors or not, I hope it helped the girls learn that just because a profession is predominately male, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t take a shot at it.
