Given student’s enthusiasm to reading in this school I thought it would be only fitting to organise a ‘Love to Read’ week in the library.
The idea was simply to promote a love of reading among the whole school community. I decorated the library with the usual fanfare. Students were greeted with a floral archway as they entered the library. I had a summer reads section, a fantasy book section and a travelling books section. I had a book quiz, a book hunt quiz and a ‘guess what teachers are reading’ quiz. I also (with my father) created a giant book that allowed students to form their own collaborative story. All they had to do was keep adding sentences to the story. Students could write on one page and draw on the other.
I can tell you the heroine of the tale, a.k.a the Cluny girl has had some adventures. She’s met a giant armadillo, fairies, has had peanuts thrown at her and has been rescued by a Blackrock ‘hottie’. I organised the week just before the Easter Holidays so Easter Eggs were the perfect prize. If there’s anything I’ve learnt is that students do love chocolate and not surprisingly is one of the more popular incentives to getting students into the library.
